How Does She Do It? Finding Time to Train When You Have Kids

You know before you had kids, you were always looking for an excuse not to exercise? Now you have the perfect excuse not to exercise (too tired/no childcare/no time/no cash), yet you'd give anything for an hour to yourself to hit the gym. Sound familiar?

There's no doubt that once you have children, finding the time and energy to train is a challenge. Oh, for the days when you could just slip on your trainers and head out for a carefree run!

Regardless of your situation, there are still ways you can integrate exercise into your life.

1. Walk
It's free, easy and you can tag the tots along. Don't think you'll see the benefit? Fear not, mile-for-mile, walking can burn as many calories as running and if you up the tempo and factor in some hills, you'll up the cardiovascular benefits.

2. Find a gym with a creche
Many gyms now offer childcare as part of the membership in Ofsted-registered creches. Yes, it comes at a cost but shop around for the cheapest option and think of it as an investment in your health.

3. Use your commute
If you work and have access to shower facilities, could you cycle or run into work? It can be an ideal way to integrate exercise into your day, save on commuting costs and beat the rush-hour traffic.

4. Exercise DVDs
Forget the retro-tastic image of dancing around the living room in lycra, there are some excellent workouts out there which can be done in under half an hour and get great results. Look for intensive interval-style workouts for maximum benefits in minimum time.

5. Become an early bird
If you have a husband or partner at home (and can bear early morning exercise) try heading out for an early jog or bike ride before they go to work. Use interval training to get the most out of your time, interspersing high effort bursts with short, easier periods.
